Dear Holland
Her hair wasn't quite curly yet.
The light would bounce onto her hair, and reflect off her skin. She had her tiny fingers around a couple of mine, as we walked from Forza Coffee in University Place towards her Nanette's home a few blocks down. Not unusual, except--Holland was bare footed. Holland has been a little badass since she was...not even three years old yet. It was so adorable, I tried to wrap my head around why I'm such a wimp. I mean, I need shoes. The asphalt streets are not our feet's friend, but here she is.
Fifteen years later...
Holland, this next few years will be the most challenging and beautiful time of your life. The majors and minors you've picked, is so fitting. Even if you decided to do something else tomorrow--we would not only cheer you on, but be inspired. Being able to change for yourself, is not easy, but I have no doubt, you'll do what is most fulfilling for yourself.
We are all so proud of you...did I tell you that being an artist-wrestler is hard? It's SOOO HARD...I mean, so much so, you're the only one I know.
I'm excited to see your updates online. If there is ever a time you aren't so sure about things, it's okay--we all have that, like, forever---FOR EV ER.
Love you,
Byeeeee!
Siya
UNCLE RAD
Holland, holland, holland…
Holland.
Whatever you do, never lose sight of your dreams.
Remember who you are.
Forget who you’re not.
There is never a perfect time.
Perfection can be subjective.
But if you are going to perfect something, perfect balance.
Travel.
Read the Alchemist.
Make time for yourself.
Treasure your friends.
Not everything is all that it seems.
Not everything is always as bad as it first seems.
The best time is yesterday, the next best time is now.
A sketchbook and a pen/pencil is your friend.
A sketchbook and a pen/pencil used daily is a best friend.
Don’t forget where you came from.
Don’t always know where you’re going.
Get your hands dirty.
Explore.
Get lost on purpose.
Find your way.
Then make a map out of it.
Have fun.
Kick ass.
Then have more fun.
Love you.
Uncle Rad.
TO HOLLAND - FROM DOODLEY DON

Actual Donny words of wisdom for Holland: Hustle culture can be misunderstood easily. It’s not always fun doing what you love. So don’t push yourself so hard. Taking the time to take a break will help remind you why you love drawing. That way you can continue drawing instead of feeling overwhelmed easily.
